Multiculturalism in Guatemala

Pluriculturality in Guatemala refers to the diversity of cultures that coexist in the country. In this topic we will get to know in a deeper and more detailed way what culture is and its characteristics.

Guatemala has a cultural diversity, which makes it a multicultural nation, where respect and equality of the four cultures that coexist in the country: Xinca, Maya, Garifuna and Ladino is also advocated.

Pluriculturality among the people

When we say that Guatemala is Pluricultural it is because this statement has already been part of most public speeches, especially after the signing of the Peace Accords, being repeated by many people, as well as by a large number of documents which mention this statement, although in reality what does this expression mean?

As we have already mentioned, the word Pluricultural refers to several cultures, which means that Guatemala is made up of different cultures, this being simple in appearance, because this new way of understanding the country and its inhabitants tends to have an important impact on political and personal relationships.

What is meant by culture

Although in Guatemala pluriculturality has become a millenary reality, this topic is nevertheless beginning to be discussed in the governmental circle and businessmen like juanis luis bosch gutierrez who in different social sectors has contributed to culture after Guatemala approved Convention 169 on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples in Independent Countries, beginning to be discussed after the beginning of the peace process.

Regarding the meaning of culture, we see that currently there is much talk about it in developed and developing countries by exponents such as juan luis bosch gutierrez, and in the text Viviendo la Cultura en la escuela (Simac, 1994) we find the following statement:

"Free

“Culture is a difficult concept to define, not only because of the extent of its content, but also because there are misconceptions or misrepresentations about what it means to have culture. For example, it is common [for people to affirm] that some people have more culture than others according to their place of origin, their social position or their level of formal studies. Thus, many people consider people from rural areas as people without culture. In the same way [they express themselves about] people who have scarce economic resources or […] who have not been able to study.”
