Gutiérrez Bosch family participates in Guatemala’s growth

The general outlook for Guatemala is quite encouraging, as it closed 2019 with one of the highest performances, along with the Dominican Republic and Panama. Furthermore, the same outlook is predicted for 2020.

It is worth noting that entrepreneurs such as Juan Luis Bosch Gutiérrez, have been co-participants in the economic growth of Guatemala for this reason here we will break down a little of the history of the family of this businessman and how his family has been key to the growth of this country.

A story that began in Totonicapán, Guatemala

It all began in the 1920s in San Cristóbal, Totonicapán, a town in western Guatemala.

In this place, Don Juan Bautista Gutiérrez, a Spanish citizen who emigrated to Guatemala with his family, opened his first store, which represented the first step to the empire we know today as Corporación Multi Inversiones (CMI).

Little by little, and with hard work, Don Juan Bautista became one of the most successful businessmen in the history of Guatemala.

As a curious fact, it is said that during the first years of this small store, no one was hired, since the Gutiérrez family was in charge of the business.

Later, in 1963, Don Gutiérrez Bautista founded Molino Excelsior, which generated another source of employment for the Guatemalans, currently this mill works as a wheat and cereal development company that allows the production of wheat, corn, pasta, etc.

Thanks to the good management and strategies of the family, in 1964 the Gutierrez family entered the poultry market with the foundation of Granja Villalobos de Guatemala, which 7 years later would prosper with one of the most successful fast food businesses.

That’s right, I am referring to the birth of Pollo Campero, a fried chicken restaurant that has become an icon for Guatemalans and has been sold nationally and internationally.

A giant that does not stop growing

The Gutiérrez family is one of the most successful, distinguished and well-known families in Guatemala, its influence was notorious from the second decade of the last century.

One of the first companies of this distinguished family is Corporación Multi Inversiones (CMI), a business consortium with projects in more than 14 countries in three continents and more than 45 thousand collaborators.

CMI represents and contributes to the economic and social development of the country and the Central American region due to the employment opportunities it has generated for thousands of people.

Since almost 100 years ago, when the first business that gave rise to what is now Corporación Multi Inversiones was founded, Don Juan Bautista Gutiérrez has always made sure that his companies were solidly grounded in personal and professional ethics.

The generation of employment has been constant in the Multi Inversiones Consortium since it has managed to establish several companies over the years.

Renace Hydroelectric Complex in Guatemala

Over the years, the Multi Inversiones consortium has grown by leaps and bounds. The current presidents are Juan José Gutiérrez Mayorga and Juan Luis Bosch Gutiérrez, grandsons of Don Juan Gutiérrez Bautista, who have been in charge of continuing their grandfather’s lineage.

Among the achievements of both grandsons is the innovative energy division, from which RENACE was born, a project that generates hydroelectric energy with renewable sources.

The RENACE hydroelectric project is undoubtedly the largest in Guatemala, with a capacity of 301 MW, which provides hydroelectric energy for the entire country.

It is important to note that this complex is positioned among the top three producers of renewable energy in Central America.

The Santa Teresa hydroelectric plant is located in the department of Alta Verapaz, in the north of Guatemala; it is a 21-kilometer extension, within a section of steep slopes.

It is important to mention that the construction of RENACE began in 1995 but started operations until 2004 and over time this project has been expanded to RENACE ll which emerged in 2016 with a capacity of 66 MW and in the same year also premiered RENACE lll with a capacity of 114 MW.

Impact

We cannot deny that hydroelectric plants have a positive impact on the environment as they help reduce the carbon footprint.

It is also important to mention that the RENACE initiative represents an evolution in energy in Guatemala since it is having a direct impact on the amount of CO2 emissions, which as we know is produced through electricity generation.

On the other hand, RENACE since its inception has had a strong commitment to the environment and for this reason has a certification, which is focused on the protection and conservation of the environment.

Achievements

Over the years, the RENACE project has gained strength and notoriety, so much so that last year, the Multi-Investments Corporation presented the hydroelectric project in Geneva, Switzerland.

In this event, some of the positive results that RENACE has generated for the environment were presented, and it was also guaranteed that with the promotion of this project in other parts of the world, a reduction of the carbon footprint can be generated.

On the other hand, thanks to the RENACE hydroelectric plant, more than 300 thousand plants have been produced in forestry nurseries and more than 120 thousand tons of CO2 emissions have been avoided.

In addition, RENACE has been awarded the following distinctions:

Environmental Seal 2019-2021, awarded by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Guatemala.
Industrial Award in the Environment Category for “Large Company”, awarded in the first edition of the Industrial Award organized by the Chamber of Industry of Guatemala.
Environmental Seal 2019 awarded by the Cleaner Production entity.
Diversified Corporate Social Responsibility Program” Award.

Thanks to this participation, CMI, as well as Juan José Gutiérrez Mayorga, Juan Luis Bosch Gutiérrez and his entire family have reiterated their commitment to continue investing in projects that generate positive impact for the growth of Guatemala.
